Sight Word Folder

The sight word folder is a self paced activity.  Please work on the words at home with your child nightly.  The more they see the words, the better they will know the words.  When your child has "mastered" a list, sign the bottom of the page, and write a note in the planner to let me know that your child is ready to read the list to me. If they can do it in any order, I will put a sticker on the page and they can move to the next list!

Remember, this is the start of your child's life as a reader,  so it is extremely important that every interaction they have with becoming a reader is a positive experience.  The goal I have for your child is not just to read, but to LOVE to read.

There are MANY ways to make the sight word list routine fun.... Here are some ideas that you can use at home when working with your child.

*Use alphabet cereal or cheese it crackers with the letters on them to make the words and read them.

*Play hopscotch. Write sight words in the spaces.

*Take an old shower curtain and make a "twister" template on it. Tape your word list words on it and put your left foot on "and" and right hand on "the"....They will love it!!

*Go fishing! Put the words on paper cut outs that you and your child make to look like fish. Attach a paper clip to each fish.  Put a magnet on a string and catch those sight words.

*Play find the word.  Write the words on cards and scatter the words around the yard.  Tell your child which word to find.  Have them run and find it and bring it to you, point to the word and read it.

*Play the memory game.  Write each word on two cards, put them face down on the table and try to find a match.  Each time they flip a card they have to read the word on that card.

*Go on a word hunt. Use a magnifying glass to be a detective and find the sight words in a book.

*Parking garage word game. Take a piece of paper and draw parking spaces.  Write a word in each space.  Tell your child to "park" a small toy car on a certain word.  This can be changed to fit what ever type of small toy you would like to use such as if you are using toy jewels you could draw treasure chests with the words in them.

*Play doh is always fun.  Use Play-doh to make "snakes" and curve them into the letters to build the words.
